Xperex provides self-service technology kiosks and in-store response media to the retail sector. Examples of Xperex applications include a network of over 2,500 employee recruitment stations for a leading grocery and drug chain, a network of self-service kiosks for a leading automotive aftermarket parts-and-service retailer, and an interactive consumer network for reviewing products, events and services available in retail malls.
Xperex chose BlueCat® embedded Linux® to fulfill the need in its kiosks and interactive solutions for an industrial-strength operating system with secure, advanced networking capabilities. Normally, an in-store POS terminal's memory is consumed by the operating system rather than by the actual applications. With BlueCat Linux's small footprint, a system is able to free up valuable memory so that the actual POS application can run at either less than eight or 16 megabytes, which is usually required for speedy transactions and quick information retrieval.
