VeriFone's Sapphire on-site controller and web server works in tandem with the Ruby SuperSystem point-of-sale (POS) solution for petroleum-convenience store operators. The Ruby packs credit-card processing, fuel dispensing, dispenser card reader (DCR) control, and electronic cash register (ECR) functions into a compact unit. The Sapphire controller provides Ruby with open systems connectivity to peripherals using standard components such as TCP/IP and XML data interchange.
The LynxOS® real-time operating system (RTOS) was chosen for Sapphire because it can prioritize deterministically, and because it can run both web server and mission-critical software. LynuxWorks™' comprehensive TCP/IP routing protocol and SNMP management protocols quelled any connectivity issues prior to production.
