Real-Time Operating Systems: LynxSecure Support for the new Intel Core i7 Processor Family

LynxSecure securely runs multiple guest operating systems—including Windows®, Linux® and RTOS—on new multi-core Intel® Core™ processors

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., Jan. 7, 2010—LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced that its LynxSecure separation kernel and embedded hypervisor will support the new Intel® Core™ i7 processor family. This combination will provide embedded developers across many industries the performance and security enhancements they require for their next generation of products. The Intel Core i7 is based on 32nm process technology and features intelligent performance, power efficiency, integrated graphics and error correcting code (ECC) memory on industry-standard x86 architecture.

LynxSecure is a separation kernel and embedded hypervisor that provides an environment in which multiple guest operating systems and their applications can execute at the same time, in their own virtual partitions without compromising security, reliability or data integrity. LynxSecure takes advantage of many of the key hardware features in Intel's chips to make sure that real-time performance and determinism is maintained, whilst offering near-native performance for traditional desktop operating systems such as Windows® and Linux® that run on the same platform.

"With LynxSecure taking advantage of the improved performance, multi-core and virtualization technologies embedded in the Intel Core i7 processor family, our customers will be able to run virtualized guest operating systems, such as Windows and LynxOS at near-native performance," said Robert Day, vice president of marketing at LynuxWorks.

"The Intel Core i7 processor with hardware-based Intel Virtualization Technology is an ideal platform for the LynuxWorks LynxSecure separation kernel and embedded hypervisor because it enables application performance in a protected, virtualized environment," said Ryan Parker, director of marketing for the Intel Embedded and Communications Group.

The Intel Core i7 processor family features multi-core processing with industry-leading performance-enhancing capabilities, including Intel Turbo Boost Technology and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology. In addition to being software compatible with previous IA-32 processors, the i7 processor family includes Advanced Encryption Standard Instructions (AES-NI), which help to accelerate data encryption and decryption. The new Intel processors also include an integrated graphics engine and an integrated memory controller—which gives developers an efficient two-chip platform to use in designing demanding virtualized solutions.
