Real-Time Operating Systems: LynxSecure Embedded Hypervisor wins top Security Award

London, England, December 4, 2009 —LynuxWorks™ is proud to announce that its LynxSecure 3.0 won the prestigious Security Category at the 2009 Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Innovation Awards in London.

The IET is one of the world's leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, with more than 150,000 members in 127 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.

Dr. Hamid Mirab, middle, Managing Director, EMEA, LynuxWorks, receives the IET award for LynuxWorks' LynxSecure separation kernel and embedded hypervisor
For real-time systems with software virtualization, the award-winning LynxSecure embedded hypervisor and separation kernel.

In their citation, the judges said, "This is a genuine innovation of some importance to the cyber security arena whilst being based on proven technology. It is an evolutionary step forward and has been developed with security as a basis for the whole design. It has several innovative features and has been designed to achieve security certification, can operate with multiple levels of security, and has a credible military heritage. LynxSecure 3.0 has a significant potential market that is not easily addressed by alternative solutions. It is therefore a worthy winner of this years' award."

Receiving the award, Hamid Mirab, Managing Director, EMEA, LynuxWorks, said, "We are delighted to receive this prestigious award from one of the world's leading professional bodies for engineers. Their recognition of the leading technology that has made LynxSecure a resounding success in the embedded security market is very much appreciated by the team that built it."

LynxSecure is a separation kernel and embedded hypervisor, designed to be used in secure real-time environments to the highest levels of security. The small separation kernel part of LynxSecure maintains the real-time determinism and security separation including the definition of secure information flow policies between applications running on a single piece of embedded hardware. The embedded hypervisor allows not only applications, but also "guest" operating systems to run on top of LynxSecure. This gives developers the ability to run an RTOS and its applications next to a desktop operating system such as Windows or Linux on the same system.

The IET Innovation Awards celebrate the products, technologies and processes that lead the way in engineering innovation. Spanning 15 categories, the awards are judged by engineering experts and recognize the depth and breadth of innovative work being carried out across all areas of engineering and technology.

The judging panel was chaired by Chris Shire, Infineon Technologies Ltd and included Andy Bates, the lead on cyber security in QinetiQ and Andrew Cambridge, Chief Scientist for the Communications and Information Systems division at Ultra Electronics.
