Embedded Linux operating system combined with Portwell ECX board enables accelerated development of next-generation low-power devices

EMBEDDED WORLD 2009 CONFERENCE, Nuremberg, Germany, March 3, 2009 — LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced its BlueCat® 5.6 Linux® operating system will help accelerate development of next-generation mobile communications devices by supporting the latest versions of the Intel® Atom™ processor Z5xx series platform, which includes industrial temperature-range options. These new platform options, combined with the open-source Linux flexibility of BlueCat, enables developers to quickly design and manufacture ultra-portable, low-power fanless applications deployed in unconstrained thermal environments.

The first board to have BlueCat running with the new Intel Atom processor is the Portwell PEB-2738. A fully featured platform offering, this is particularly well suited to medical, military and industrial low-power applications.

"Low-power devices are becoming an integral part of LynuxWorks' core markets," said George Brooks, director, business development at LynuxWorks

"Low-power devices are becoming an integral part of LynuxWorks' core markets—and imperative to our customers," said George Brooks, director, business development at LynuxWorks. "Thus, it's a natural fit for us to optimize BlueCat to take advantage of all of the enhanced features in the Intel Atom processor. Using the Portwell PEB-2738 hardware as the first port of BlueCat offers our customers in the medical, military and industrial sectors a complete hardware and software platform."

"Intel drove enhancements in low power and high performance from the ground up when designing the Intel Atom processor Z5xx series platform and now we are able to offer additional options with an industrial temperature range from -40°C to +85°C," said Jonathan Luse, director of marketing, Intel Low Power Embedded Products Division. "When you couple that kind of performance and power savings with a robust and flexible Linux operating system, such as BlueCat, developers now have the ability to create truly compelling new low-power applications that can be deployed in unconstrained thermal environments."

BlueCat Linux 5.6, based on the 2.6.23 kernel, is an implementation of the Linux model enhanced for use in embedded systems ranging from small consumer-type devices to large-scale, multi-CPU systems. Delivering the flexibility and cost benefits of open-source software, BlueCat is uniquely constructed to be a stable, commercial-grade embedded operating system, which provides immediate productivity and optimized performance.

"For low-power devices, the combination of LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux and the latest versions of the Intel Atom processor is a very compelling solution" said Frank Shen, product marketing director at Portwell, "Our latest ECX form factor platform is a perfect compact solution for customers who want to bring this hardware/software combination into their next generation of devices."
