LynxOS 5.0 Enhances Curtiss-Wright Controls SVME/DMV-183 Data- and Digital Signal-Processing Board

Board Support Package (BSP) enables Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) on PowerPC processors with AltiVec technology, providing higher throughput and better hardware utilization

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., March 10, 2009 — LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced that Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (NYSE: CW), a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX and CompactPCI products, has partnered with LynuxWorks to support the LynxOS 5.0 real-time operating system (RTOS) on its SVME/DMV-183 data- and digital signal-processing board.

The SVME/DMV-183, Curtiss-Wright Controls' popular, industry-leading PowerPC®-based rugged, single-board computer, was developed specifically to meet the needs of harsh environments. With LynxOS 5.0's support of symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) on the latest PowerPC processors with AltiVec™ technology, Curtiss-Wright Controls customers will be able to better utilize available hardware for faster data throughput when using the SVME/DMV-183.

"As a result of our alliance with Curtiss-Wright Controls, developers will benefit from an industry-leading foundation for sophisticated real-time systems."

Today's announcement represents LynuxWorks' second generation POSIX-conformant and Linux-binary compatible operating system on Curtiss-Wright Controls' hardware platform.

"We feel our customers will appreciate the new features LynuxWorks has designed into LynxOS 5.0," said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Modular Solutions, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. "The software's performance improvement more than meets the stringent requirements for real-time mission-critical applications - and it gives our customers the benefit of a COTS solution that is designed to endure the harshest environments."

Joe Wlad, director of certification, services and marketing at LynuxWorks said: "In continuing our partnership with Curtiss-Wright Controls, we've re-stated our commitment to providing the military and aerospace industries with the most advanced, robust and reliable software for applications that require zero downtime. As a result of our alliance with Curtiss-Wright Controls, developers will benefit from lower costs, reduced time to market, and an industry-leading foundation for sophisticated real-time systems."

The SVME/DMV-183 can be equipped with single or dual Freescale MPC7447A/7448 PowerPC processors and up to two gigabytes of DDR SDRAM (double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory). Its main features include two 64-bit PMC sites—one of which supports 100 megahertz (MHz) PCI-X—Gigabit Ethernet, up to six serial ports, up to two 1553 channels, SCSI, serial ATA, and two USB 2.0 ports. This rich feature set satisfies the most demanding requirements of today's embedded computing applications.

Additional built-in features for LynxOS 5.0 include support for:

  • New GNU toolchain, based on the gcc 3.4.3 and GDB 6.5 standards
  • ELF file format
  • Ada programming capability
  • New POSIX—POSIX 1003.1-2003 PSE 53/54
  • Updated Linux Application Binary Interface (ABI) compatibility—Linux 2.6-based
  • Network File System (NFS) v2/v4
