Rockwell Collins to Showcase LynuxWorks' LynxSecure 2.0 at MILCOM '08

Long history of collaboration for safety systems now extending to include security and information assurance

MILITARY COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE, SAN DIEGO, Calif., Nov. 17, 2008—LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL) will be demonstrating technology using LynuxWorks' LynxSecure 2.0 embedded hypervisor and separation kernel at MILCOM '08. LynuxWorks and Rockwell Collins have a long history of working together to provide safety-critical solutions for both military and commercial avionics. Rockwell Collins' use of LynxSecure 2.0 will help speed design and development for their next generation of high-assurance complex systems.

LynxSecure provides operating-system virtualization for safety- and security-critical real-time systems and is certifiable to both Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 7 (EAL-7) and DO-178B level A

Rockwell Collins, a leader in information assurance—products, policies and procedures that allow the timely transfer of information in an accurate and secure fashion—is the first company in the world to receive certification for a Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS) microprocessor (AAMP7G) under the new National Security Agency (NSA) guidelines. Rockwell Collins chose LynxSecure 2.0, in part, to help continue that heritage of safety and security.

Rockwell Collins develops and deploys innovative communication and aviation electronic solutions for both commercial and government applications. The company, which has 20,000 employees and a global service and support network that crosses 27 countries, has expertise rooted in flight-deck avionics, cabin electronics, mission communications, information management and simulation and training.

LynxSecure providing operating system virtualization for safety- and real-time systems offers the highest standard for safety and security-critical applications. The main advantages of the operating system include:

  • The LynxSecure separation kernel, which is designed to be certifiable to Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 7 (EAL-7), and DO-178B level A, the highest level of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for safety-critical avionics applications
  • Multiple Independent Levels of Security/Safety (MILS) architecture conformance for building multi-level secure systems
  • Virtualization of guest operating systems, which allows one operating system (and its applications) to run within the environment of another kernel
  • Flexible scheduling policy, which manages Central Processing Unit (CPU) time to prevent starvation in any partition
  • Scalability, enabling a multithreaded small-footprint run-time environment for secure application development and multiprocess multithreaded environment through virtualized Red Hat®, Linux®, LynxOS® or LynxOS-178 real-time operating systems
  • Support for open standards, including a seamless migration path for LynuxWorks' customers whose Linux- and POSIX®-based applications can now be run on virtualized Red Hat, Linux and LynxOS family environments within LynxSecure partitions

"With LynxSecure 2.0, we raised the bar when it comes to superior embedded security and safety, and we believe that our technology is a perfect fit for their new generation of avionics systems," said LynuxWorks CEO Gurjot Singh.

LynuxWorks CEO Gurjot Singh said, "Companies such as Rockwell Collins need the highest level of software development platforms in order to maintain their leadership in the high-assurance complex-systems space. With LynxSecure 2.0, we raised the bar when it comes to superior embedded security and safety, and we believe that our technology is a perfect fit for their new generation of avionics systems."

MILCOM, now in its 27th year, is a national tradeshow for government, military, scientific and engineering communities. This year's conference takes place November 17-19. Rockwell Collins can be found at booth 1323 and LynuxWorks at booth 1603.
