Lockheed Martin Selects LynuxWorks' LynxOS-SE 5.0 and Luminosity 3.0.6 for Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS)

EAL 4-certifiable operating system enables Lockheed Martin to meet the security and certification needs required by U.S., German and Italian governments

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., December 2, 2008—LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced that Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has selected LynuxWorks' LynxOS®-SE 5.0 and Luminosity 3.0.6 for the company's Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS™), which is designed to replace PATRIOT systems in the United States and Germany and Nike Hercules systems in Italy. The two software applications provide companies with a fast and easy way to create, edit, compile, manage and debug system applications.

LynxOS-SE was chosen in part because it is the first and only time- and space-partitioned, real-time operating system (RTOS) capable of running POSIX®, ARINC 653 and Linux applications simultaneously.

"LynxOS-SE is designed to help companies meet the stringent security needs and requirements inherent in complex systems," said Gurjot Singh, CEO, LynuxWorks.

"This is the first time that LynxOS-Security Enhanced has been implemented by Lockheed Martin for one of the company's air defense systems," said Gurjot Singh, CEO, LynuxWorks. "LynxOS-SE is designed to help companies meet the stringent security needs and requirements inherent in complex systems."

LynxOS-SE is a POSIX-conformant RTOS designed specifically to fulfill the stringent needs of multithreaded and multiprocess applications in high-performance systems. In its fifth generation, LynxOS-SE now provides security enhancements using access control lists (ACLs), roles, capabilities and auditing, a key requirement for medium-assurance applications with Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL 4).

Lockheed Martin will also utilize Luminosity, a Java™-based integrated development environment (IDE) that is based on the popular open-source Eclipse IDE platform. The third generation of Luminosity supports the latest LynuxWorks operating systems, including LynxOS 5 and LynxOS-SE and provides a simplified, flexible platform to create, edit, compile, manage and debug embedded and real-time applications. The easy-to-use interface gives developers easy access to a wide array of both enterprise and embedded plug-in tools to speed development and reduce time to market via the unique Luminosity Validated Plug-In Program.

When MEADS development is complete, it will provide capabilities beyond any other fielded or planned air and missile defense system. It will be easily deployed to a theater of operations and, once there, will keep pace with fast-moving maneuver forces. It will be the only air and missile defense system able to roll off tactical transports with troops and almost immediately begin operations.

More importantly, its open architecture will provide for 21st-Century air and missile defense system-of-system integration capabilities that allow operational mission-tailoring for homeland defense or defense-of-maneuver forces. MEADS will also provide greater firepower with less manpower than current systems, producing dramatic operation and support cost savings.
