GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms Announces Availability of LynxOS RTOS Release 5.0

Support for multicore PowerPC, larger memory, SMP

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, July 23, 2008—GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms today announced that it has completed the porting of LynuxWorks™ LynxOS® real-time operating system release 5.0 to a number of the company's hardware products. This latest version of the operating system provides support for larger memory maps and symmetric multiprocessing, a key requirement for today's leading-edge applications such as signal- and sensor processing.

"LynxOS release 5.0 provides new features and functionality that are much in demand for major military programs because of their increasing use of multiprocessing architectures to achieve the performance they require, and we believe we are well ahead of the industry in making it available," said Andy West, Product Manager, SBC Software at GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms. "We have been working closely with LynuxWorks over the past several months prior to official availability of this new release in order to deliver our combined hardware-software offering that meets those requirements."

Release 5.0 of LynxOS provides a number of key new capabilities, including support for the latest PowerPC® multicore 8641 processor which is at the heart of GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms' VXS DSP220 multiprocessor and DSP230 VPX multiprocessor. Porting has also been completed to the PPC7A, PPC7D and PPC8A single-board computers, with further ports to other GE Fanuc hardware platforms in progress.

"Working closely with a major hardware vendor such as GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms in the development of a new software release brings real value to both companies—and, ultimately, to our customers," said Sonia Leal, LynxOS product manager at LynuxWorks. "Customers who need the new functionality offered by LynxOS release 5.0 can be assured of a robust, reliable platform—and we believe that working with GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms helps us to achieve that goal."

GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms provides a broad range of hardware solutions built around the VME, VXS, VPX and CompactPCI standards, in 3U and 6U form factors and maximizing the potential of PowerPC and Intel processors. The company's hardware is at the heart of many major military programs where rugged reliability is a prerequisite.
