New release makes LynuxWorks the first embedded Linux provider to offer open and supported Linux distributions for Xilinx FPGAs using PowerPC and MicroBlaze processors

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., March 12, 2007—LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in embedded software, further illustrated its commitment to both the open-source community and Xilinx embedded processor users with the announcement today of its latest Linux-based operating system, BlueCat® Linux® Micro Edition (BlueCat-ME).

BlueCat-ME, a result of the company's previously announced affiliation with chipmaker Xilinx (NASDAQ: XLNX), offers full support of the Linux 2.6 kernel. BlueCat-ME, available today, also makes LynuxWorks the first embedded RTOS provider to enable developers to work with Linux on both PowerPC and MicroBlaze architectures and the popular LynxOS for PowerPC®.

The latest addition to LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux line, BlueCat-ME also offers the benefits of the latest Linux distribution to developers using non-memory management unit (non-MMU) architectures for their embedded systems for the first time. Through these unprecedented capabilities, BlueCat-ME expands open-source developers' flexibility and allows them to create the most powerful applications possible. Prior to this, developers were forced to use the 2.4 Linux variant, uCLinux.

"BlueCat-ME Linux furthers LynuxWorks' continuing commitment to provide Xilinx embedded developers the highest-performance Linux features available," said Robert Day, vice president of marketing for LynuxWorks. "LynuxWorks takes pride in having been the first to introduce a fully supported embedded Linux product based on the 2.6 kernel for the MicroBlaze processor."

BlueCat-ME offers the flexibility of open-source software by leveraging the Linux model. It extends the developers' investment by providing a simple path to migrate to real-time, deterministic performance. In conjunction with the Xilinx MicroBlaze embedded developers kit (EDK), BlueCat-ME automatically configures a board support package based on the parameters set within the EDK, which allows software engineers to easily change it if the FPGAs programmable logic is reconfigured.

"BlueCat-ME ushers in a new age in embedded Linux development and represents a milestone in the Xilinx-LynuxWorks relationship," said Tom Feist, Director of Marketing, Embedded and DSP solutions, Xilinx. "The combination of LynuxWorks' BlueCat-ME with the Xilinx MicroBlaze processors offers embedded system designers a powerful, yet cost-effective, development platform."

The Xilinx MicroBlaze solution is a scalable processor system that enables embedded developers to tune performance to match the requirements of target applications. The "soft" processor core can be implemented in the Xilinx Virtex and Spartan FPGA families, and offers unparalleled ease of use and flexibility with user-configurable peripheral hardware options.

BlueCat Linux is an implementation of the Linux model enhanced for a wide array of embedded systems, from small consumer devices to large-scale, multi-CPU systems.
