LynuxWorks Demonstrates Technology Leadership by Providing RTOS Solution for Ship Self-Defense System

Reliability, open standards key in selection of LynxOS for next-generation combat system
Ship Self-defense System (SSDS)

Embedded Systems Conference, Boston, Sept. 20, 2007—Demonstrating its value in mission-critical military systems once again, LynuxWorks™, Inc., today announced that its flagship real-time operating system (RTOS), LynxOS®, is serving as the platform for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems' Ship Self-Defense System (SSDS), the next-generation combat system that automates defense sensors and weapon systems on board across different U.S. Navy ships.

The hard, real-time capabilities of LynxOS, combined with LynuxWorks' rich tradition of leadership in open standards, addressed the requirements of the Navy's Open Architecture initiative, which was instituted to implement international standards and create common applications and services among military platforms.

Prior to fielding SSDS in 2003, the radars and anti-air self-defense weapons found on amphibious warships and aircraft carriers were installed as stand-alone systems, and required considerable human intervention to complete the process of defending against anti-ship cruise missiles. Currently being implemented on three Navy ship classes, Raytheon's open-architecture SSDS integrates data from a set of sensors to identify and prioritize threats. The system provides a clearer picture of the threat situation and a quicker assessment of tactical decisions to use in return.

"The Navy's Open Architecture program and SSDS represent the importance of COTS embedded technologies to the defense forces of the future," said Gurjot Singh, president and CEO, LynuxWorks. "Open standards have become de rigueur, and LynuxWorks has been leading this movement for nearly 20 years. By continuing to innovate with companies such as Raytheon on SSDS and other projects, LynuxWorks will continue to bring to market innovative solutions that will help protect and defend the fleet."

The LynxOS RTOS represents 18 years of innovation by LynuxWorks, with industry-leader conformance to open standards including Linux, POSIX and UNIX. Each LynxOS component is designed for hard, real-time performance, meaning it must respond, without fail, within a given period of time. This predictable response is insured even under heavy stress loads. LynxOS also exhibits true linear scalability so that it remains deterministic even as the tasks it performs increase.

LynuxWorks operating systems prove themselves every day in a wide array of Navy Open Architecture programs including the DDG-1000 next-generation warship, the SPY radar program, Weapons Control System (WCS), Patriot Missile Trainer and Simulator, Joint Tactical Combat Training System, the BSG-1 Program Nuclear Tomahawk Missile Program and many, many more. In addition to its flagship RTOS, LynxOS, LynuxWorks also provides proven technologies for safety-critical (LynxOS-178) and security-critical (LynxSecure) military, aerospace and other mission-critical environments.
