LynuxWorks and Objective Interface Simplify Development of Secure Distributed Systems for Military, Aerospace

Integration of LynxOS-SE and ORBexpress RT offers platform for high-performance, secure communications for safety- and security-critical environments

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., and HERNDON, Va., Jan. 3, 2007—Addressing increased demand for real-time embedded software that meets the most rigorous requirements for safety, security and high performance, LynuxWorks™, Inc. and Objective Interface Systems today announced that ORBexpress® RT now supports LynuxWorks' LynxOS-SE real-time operating system (RTOS). For the first time, developers can use the industry's highest-performing, smallest-footprint object request broker (ORB), ORBexpress RT, with the LynxOS-SE RTOS to build safe and secure military and aerospace systems. This out-of-the-box integrated solution reduces costs and speeds time-to-market.

"LynuxWorks and Objective Interface share a commitment to using open standards to develop innovative solutions for developers of defense and aerospace systems," said Joe Wlad, director of product management for LynuxWorks. "The combination of LynxOS-SE and ORBexpress provides a strong foundation for developers to deliver hard real-time embedded applications that require adherence to the highest levels of security- and safety-critical performance."

"Objective Interface Systems and LynuxWorks have a long history of collaboration on high-performance and secure software," said Joe Jacob, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Objective Interface Systems. "The integration of ORBexpress and LynxOS-SE brings today's most advanced secure communications technology not only to military and aerospace systems, but to other environments that require secure, high-performance infrastructures such as robotics and telecommunications."

ORBexpress is based on the Real-time Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) standard that enables real-time and embedded devices in heterogeneous environments to communicate seamlessly. ORBexpress has been recognized as the fastest ORB in the industry in independent studies conducted by Boeing's Phantom Works Group and Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technology Laboratory. It is used for the development of hard real-time systems, where reliability and predictability are critical. ORBexpress RT exceeds the Real-Time CORBA 1.0 standard, providing a development environment uniquely suited to building fast, reliable distributed systems that are predictable from end-to-end. ORBexpress RT also provides developers the ability to plug in additional transport technologies using the standard General Inter-ORB Protocol (GIOP) protocol.

LynxOS-SE, the latest of LynuxWorks' RTOS products, continues the company's longstanding support of open standards. The product offers a powerful combination of POSIX and ARINC 653-1 compliance, which is highly desired in today's military and avionics applications. Additionally, LynxOS-SE provides a Linux Application Binary Interface (ABI) that allows Linux applications to run unmodified alongside native POSIX and ARINC applications within brick wall partitions. This enables customers to take advantage of the many Linux third-party commercial-off-the-shelf solutions (COTS) applications, many of which have been tested by LynuxWorks in this environment, and run them in a time-space partitioned, hard real-time environment.
