LynuxWorks Unveils LynxSecure Separation Kernel on Intel Virtualization Technology for Military and Avionics Applications

New RTOS provides secure partitioning, allowing multiple guest operating systems to run on multiple virtual cores on a single chip

SAN JOSÉ, CALIF., Nov. 14, 2006—Raising the bar for embedded software security and safety once again, LynuxWorks™, Inc., today announced LynuxWorks' LynxSecure, the first embedded separation kernel with multiple independent levels of security (MILS), on Intel®'s Virtualization Technology. This powerful combination of industry-leading technologies provides developers of military and avionics systems a robust environment within which multiple secure and non-secure operating systems can perform at the same time—with no negative impact on performance.

The military and avionics industries have strict requirements to deliver high-security software application environments utilizing operating systems and development tools. At the same time, today's military networks need to interface with civilian IT infrastructure, which can expose them to program bugs and other threats. Designed to address these stringent security and safety concerns, LynxSecure conforms to the MILS architecture, which provides strict guidelines for data isolation, damage limitation and information flow policies.

"LynxSecure represents the future of embedded software security and secure operating systems," said Gurjot Singh, CEO, LynuxWorks. "Security is the key to the embedded landscape. And while security advancements usually come from the military, we also must find ways to apply those advancements in the civilian world. The combination of LynxSecure and Intel VT® provide a solution that addresses security needs."

Software separation and hardware virtualization technologies enable one operating system to run within the same environment as another, supporting multiple operating system environments on the same physical hardware. Unlike a traditional security kernel that performs all trusted functions for a secure operating system, LynxSecure is a separation kernel that partitions data and system resources, and controls information flow among the partitions. LynxSecure supports Symmetric MultiProcessing (SMP) and 32-bit/64-bit addressing for high-end scalability. LynxSecure will be certifiable to both Common Criteria EAL 7 and DO-178B level A, and its separation technology puts it in a unique place to attain these certifications.
