LynxOS' Linux API-compatibility enables TDS to seamlessly migrate to real-time deterministic performance for reliable monitoring and control of power-generation systems
SAN JOSÉ, Calif., January 5, 2004—LynuxWorks™ Inc. today announced that its LynxOS® real-time operating system (RTOS) is powering Turbine Diagnostics Services' (TDS) TurboNet Dash 1, a cutting-edge system that allows power companies to efficiently control their generators and perform preventative maintenance to identify potential system problems.
TDS is a complete turbine-generator service company providing control systems to the power-generation industry, as well as troubleshooting and specialized maintenance services for steam and gas turbine generators. The company recently introduced TurboNet Dash 1, a cutting-edge control system that is ideal for improved monitoring of current power-generation systems and more effective control of generator equipment. The first system was recently installed in a steam turbine generator in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The TurboNet Dash 1 control processors operate on the LynxOS hard real-time operating system for continuous and reliable operational processing and communications, which is critical in enabling power-generation companies to efficiently monitor and respond to system errors before they occur.
In addition, TDS turned to LynxOS because of its compatibility with Linux®. The similarities in LynxOS and Linux APIs enabled TDS to seamlessly migrate its Linux applications to LynxOS. As a result, Linux applications can now run unchanged in a LynxOS environment to achieve hard real-time deterministic performance, a critical requirement to ensure reliable real-time control loops and avoid power-generation system failure and shutdowns.
"The hallmark of our TurboNet Dash 1 system is its speed, power, flexibility, and operational reliability, thanks in part to the LynxOS operating system," said Ernesto Colon, vice president, senior consulting engineer, TDS. "The fact that LynxOS is widely used in avionics and military systems is significant and provided us the confidence that it would provide the performance and functionality we were needing for our TurboNet Dash 1 system. Most importantly, our customers can also be confident that our system will reliably and effectively monitor and control their power-generator systems to catch and respond to problems before they happen."
"The Linux compatibility and hard real-time functionality in LynxOS continues to be a powerful formula in meeting developer's needs across many industries, including the manufacturing industry," said Bob Morris, vice president, sales and marketing for LynuxWorks. "The LynxOS' process model and open standard APIs provide TDS long-term support and portability to build upon the functionality and performance of their current system and continue to respond to the needs of the power-generation industry."
