Embedded software leader committed to driving next wave of embedded Linux adoption

SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—March 8, 2004—LynuxWorks™ Inc. introduced today the industry's first pre-configured board support package (BSP) based on the Linux 2.6 kernel for the Apple PowerPC® G5, the world's first 64-bit desktop processor.

The PowerPC G5 is the fastest PowerPC processor ever created, featuring Apple's next-generation architecture. The LynuxWorks BlueCat® Linux® 5.0 BSP will offer customers a single source of stable embedded commercial technology for development using the PowerPC G5 processor. BlueCat Linux 5.0 is an implementation of the Linux model enhanced for use in embedded systems ranging from small consumer devices to large-scale, multi-CPU systems. The BlueCat Linux BSP for the PowerPC G5 will provide embedded developers a head start in Linux development for future PowerPC 970 processors. The PowerPC G5 desktop is built on a 64-bit architecture for improved speed performance and the ability to address significant amounts of memory. With the BlueCat Linux BSP, customers can move forward with 64-bit development today and migrate to PowerPC 970 embedded hardware in the future. In addition, the BlueCat Linux BSP supports running 32-bit processor applications, allowing developers to seamlessly transition to 64-bit processing support.

PowerPC G5 represents LynuxWorks' second BSP based on the Linux 2.6 kernel, having previously introduced the x86/Intel IA-32 BSP. The increased real-time behavior of Linux 2.6 is quickly becoming the standard for embedded Linux developers. To meet the growing needs of its customers, LynuxWorks is aggressively pursuing full Linux 2.6 kernel support to allow developers to take advantage of advanced features such as improved real-time performance, easier porting to new computers, support for large memory models and microcontrollers, and an improved I/O system.

"LynuxWorks remains committed to driving the proliferation of embedded Linux across multiple industries," said Dr. Inder Singh, chairman and CEO of LynuxWorks. "We pride ourselves in understanding our customers' needs and quickly responding to be the first to market with official PowerPC support based on the Linux 2.6 kernel. Developers can begin development for future PowerPC 970 hardware and confidently preserve their work to rapidly get their products out to market at a significantly lower cost."

Availability

The BlueCat Linux 5.0 BSP for the PowerPC G5 is expected to be available March 15, 2004. Also available will be a comprehensive set of tools for deploying Linux into embedded environments.
