LynuxWorks and Apogee to Offer RTSJ-specific Java Runtime Environments Based on IBM's J2ME-compatible Websphere Everyplace Micro Environment

SAN JOSÉ, California, June 28, 2004 — LynuxWorks™ and Apogee Software today announced that Apogee's Aphelion™ Java™ Runtime Environments (JREs) comprising IBM's CDC-J2ME-compatible WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment, ported by Apogee for IBM to various embedded systems running LynuxWorks' LynxOS® real-time operating system, will soon be available in configurations that fully implement the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ). In addition to implementing the entire RTSJ specification, each RTSJ JRE will be compatible with Sun's CDC J2ME platform.

This will be the industry-first implementation of RTSJ in JREs based on IBM's advanced Virtual Machine (VM) technology, part of IBM Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition, thus bringing this technology to developers of real-time Java applications to allow reliable, fast, and memory saving deployments of such applications. The implementations targeted at various embedded processors running other RTOSs will follow.

The first RTSJ JRE targeted at the PowerPC-based "Radstone" single-board computer running LynxOS 4.0 has just been completed by Apogee for the IDS division of Raytheon for use in running real-time Java applications targeted at LynxOS/Radstone-based device, and is being demonstrated in IBM's booth at JavaOne.

"Adding the RTSJ JREs to LynuxWorks' Java offering will broaden the leadership of LynuxWorks in providing advanced Java solutions for many types of embedded systems running LynxOS," said Bob Morris, vice president of marketing for LynuxWorks. "Java is starting to be used for developing applications targeted at embedded systems that require a high degree of real-time behavior, and LynuxWorks is ready to provide to its customers highly effective RTSJ JREs that fully facilitate the runtime deployments of such applications."

"Apogee's RTSJ JREs based on IBM WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment, when deployed on embedded systems running LynxOS, will offer a winning combination to LynuxWorks customers who want to enter the fast-growing market for Java-based real-time embedded systems," said George Malek, Chairman and CEO of Apogee. "Apogee is excited about adding the support for RTSJ to its Java offering for embedded platforms running LynxOS, thus making these platforms highly suitable for deployment of real-time Java applications."

"We are pleased that Apogee and LynuxWorks have incorporated IBM's embedded middleware into their RTSJ-specific Java offering," said Bruce Morse, Vice President Business Development, IBM Pervasive Computing. "This allows both device manufacturers and systems integrators to broaden the range of embedded systems that can benefit from IBM advanced Java technologies."
