LynuxWorks and IBM driving Linux 2.6 and 64-bit development in wide range of deeply embedded computing environments
Electronica USA, Embedded Systems Conference San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, Booth #1626, March 31, 2004—LynuxWorks™ Inc. today announced the industry's first Linux® 2.6 pre-configured board support package (BSP), BlueCat® Linux 5.0, for the IBM® 970FX PowerPC® 64-bit processor. BlueCat Linux will provide designers a stable Linux 2.6 environment for 64-bit development in a variety of embedded applications from large-scale, multi-CPU systems to small consumer devices.

The new BlueCat Linux 5.0 BSP represents LynuxWorks continued commitment in supporting IBM's complete PowerPC product line. The availability of BlueCat Linux 5.0 will enable manufacturers to take advantage of IBM's advanced chip design as well as the advanced real-time capabilities of the Linux 2.6 kernel for their embedded development projects.

In addition to supporting 64-bit computing for emerging embedded applications, the BlueCat BSP for the PowerPC 970FX will also provide native support for traditional 32-bit applications. This allows manufacturers to provide 32-bit applications with the same high performance levels it extends to 64-bit uses. Moreover, manufacturers can protect their investment and confidently preserve their 32-bit development work to rapidly get their products to market faster than their competition at a significantly lower cost.

"Business partners like LynuxWorks help provide our customers the widest range of solutions for the PowerPC processor to build their products," said Ray Bryant, director of PowerPC products, IBM Systems & Technology Group. "With BlueCat Linux, we can offer our customers the benefits of Linux 2.6 for their design needs due to the open standard interface that Linux provides."

"The growth of Linux in the embedded world has been unprecedented, and now with the introduction of Linux 2.6 the adoption rate of Linux among embedded Linux developers will accelerate," said Dr. Inder Singh, CEO and chairman of LynuxWorks. "LynuxWorks' strategy is to continue to help fuel Linux 2.6 development with our entire product portfolio, from our BlueCat Linux OS to our comprehensive suite of embedded development tools. With our support of the fastest PowerPC processor, we anticipate 64-bit and Linux development to make inroads into many more deeply embedded computing environments."

LynuxWorks BSPs also include advanced embedded tools such as VisualLynux™ and SpyKer™ to decrease production costs and speed time-to-market. VisualLynux is an extension of Microsoft Visual Studio™ IDE that enables developers to build applications in a Windows host environment to accelerate development and improve product performance and quality. LynuxWorks' SpyKer is the first dynamic instrumented system trace analyzer that allows developers to accurately perform event tracing to not only gather, display and interact with data concerning their applications, but also accelerate development and debugging with easy, anytime visibility into their product design process. With these comprehensive tools and LynuxWorks' world-class sales and technical support, developers can enhance product quality and reliability and rapidly deploy products to market at a significantly lower cost.

Availability

The BlueCat Linux 5.0 package for the IBM PowerPC 970 processor families is expected to be generally available in June 2004 on the IBM reference card and is available today on the Mac G5.
