Royal Danish Navy Selects LynxOS 4.0

Ability to run Linux applications unmodified seals the deal for LynxOS RTOS

SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—June 3, 2002—LynuxWorks™ Inc., the technology leader in the embedded software solutions market, today announced that it has supplied its LynxOS® real-time operating system to Terma A/S, a Danish contractor updating the Royal Danish Navy Standard Flex 300 (SF300) command control and communication information (C3I) system. LynxOS was the only RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) capable of satisfying all the project requirements, which included binary compatibility with Linux®-based application software and support for embedded Java™ & Java/C/C++ applications, as well as field-proven high stability, a well-developed tool chain and certification to the DO-178B military software standard.

Unlike competing operating systems evaluated for the project, LynxOS was able to meet Terma's need for a real-time operating system to be binary compatible with the Linux-based MÄK battlefield simulation software system, in which the project had made a significant investment. Terma challenged LynuxWorks to run unmodified MÄK Technologies binaries on LynxOS as part of the proof of concept. Using the beta version of the new LynxOS 4.0 (now fully released), which features Linux binary compatibility, the proof of concept was completed at LynuxWorks SA in France, and the solution was successfully demonstrated to Terma developers.

"We were very pleased when LynuxWorks stepped up and were able to demonstrate LynxOS compatibility to Linux," said Eric Kressel, Director of Business Development, Terma. "This kind of openness is unique among the real-time operating systems we have evaluated."

"This clearly demonstrates the value of the LynuxWorks philosophy, which places high value on adherence to industry standards and high quality tools, with performance and stability the prime consideration," said Gerry Winckler, LynuxWorks' managing director for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "We were very quickly able to demonstrate to Terma that LynxOS would easily satisfy all their project objectives."

Terma is updating the SF300 system together with two other Danish defence contractors, Systematic and Infocom. The SF300 system was launched in the 1980s to create an integrated C3I environment for the Royal Danish Navy, linking flexible weapons systems with standardised operator consoles and permanently installed sensors including trackers and navigational aids. The MÄK Technologies software provides the battlefield simulation environment and APIs for the SF300 system; the technological update program is extending the SF300 system capabilities while preserving the original operational functionality of the system.

"The approach taken by Terma and the Danish Navy, and the strong interest that LynxOS 4.0 with its Linux ABI compatibility is receiving from the defense and other markets, shows the growing availability of Linux-based software and the emergence of Linux as the leading open, multi-vendor standard for the embedded industry," said Inder Singh, LynuxWorks' CEO. "By using embedded Linux, or a Linux compatible RTOS like LynxOS, companies can obtain major savings in development time and cost by building on existing software instead of developing everything from scratch, or going through time consuming porting efforts."
