LynuxWorks Announces its First Industry Solution for Communications Equipment

Optical networking and new world voice applications get a jump start

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 11, 2002—LynuxWorks™ Inc, today announced JumpStart for Communications, the first of several planned industry solution packages (announced separately today) designed to streamline the development process in key vertical markets. Branded under the name JumpStart, LynuxWorks' component-based developer packages form a complete solution incorporating software drivers, the new LynxOS® 4.0 operating system, middleware, third-party layered software applications and engineering consulting time. The first package, JumpStart for Communications, is available immediately for two major communications markets, which address the equipment needs for intelligent core optical networking and new world voice applications.

Intelligent optical networking includes a variety of equipment that provides switching, routing and transport services for next-generation optical telephony and data communications networks. The recently categorized new world voice segment focuses specifically on voice applications and networks, which require a combination of soft switches, carrier gateways, RAS based gateways, voice over broadband (VoB) gateways and voice over IP (VoIP) gateways. Both market segments are rapidly evolving, placing constant pressure on developers to deliver next-generation products and applications. As a complete development environment, JumpStart for Communications enables faster product development through the reduction of critical development cycles.

"These markets promise to be major growth sectors," said Bob Morris, vice president of sales and marketing for LynuxWorks. "As a leading supplier to the communications industry, we have the technology and the expertise to provide a focused vertical solution to assist developers in meeting time to market requirements for key products that will accommodate the market's growing demand in services."

The JumpStart developer packages are designed to help manufacturers get to market quickly with pre-integrated and tested software solutions that they can use as a base for their systems. LynuxWorks' JumpStart for Communications package contains state-of-the-art networking and routing technology, including an updated TCP/IP stack supporting IPv6, IPSec, integrated firewall and other features. LynuxWorks enhanced the TCP/IP stack for reentrancy, determinism and performance. It also contains new routing algorithms such as OSPFv2, BGP-4 and RIPv2, and other advance facilities for management. Customers can configure their software for the networking features and performance they require. LynuxWorks' SynergyWorks partners offer layered solutions for the JumpStart package, including multi-protocol label switching (MPLS), Java-based management, and popular CORBA solutions. The package also includes a block of consulting time, which developers can use for customizing device drivers, protocol stacks and feature additions, or for OS porting to custom hardware architectures.

The JumpStart package is built around the new LynxOS 4.0 (see related release), which provides unparalleled hard real-time response, stability and open standard interfaces to meet the most rigorous mission-critical reliability standards necessitated by the demanding communications market. LynxOS 4.0's memory management unit (MMU)-based kernel is naturally robust and performs multiple tasks with an unprecedented level of reliability and determinism. Additionally, LynuxWorks' High Availability Package (HAP) provides a framework for system developers to create highly available systems using capabilities such as a fault management framework, redundant systems slot (RSS) support, and full CompactPCI hot swap and warm domain fail-over support for I/O boards.

JumpStart reflects LynuxWorks' philosophy of openness, giving customers maximum flexibility for planning and developing products. The software offers an unprecedented level of openness for hard real-time operating systems. It offers POSIX® conformance and is application binary interface (ABI) compatible to Linux. Standard application programming interfaces (APIs) allow LynxOS users to utilize open-source software available on the web to save time, get to market quickly, and to add more features and functionality easily to future generations of their product. With over 13 years of experience with deployed products, LynuxWorks has the long-term stability and expertise to ensure that customers' deployed products will be well supported and can evolve as requirements change over time.
