LynuxWorks Announces First Embedded Linux Development Environment for Intel IOP321 I/O Processor Based on Intel XScale Technology

Intel includes enhanced BlueCat Linux and tools with IOP321 processor support in IQ80321 reference platform

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Feb. 26, 2002—LynuxWorks™ Inc., enabling greater developer choice and flexibility in embedded designs, today announced the first commercially available embedded Linux development environment for the Intel® IOP321 I/O processor based on the Intel XScale™ technology. LynuxWorks has pre-configured for greater performance its BlueCat® 4.0 Linux® and commercial grade tools for the Intel IOP321 I/O processor. The optimized third-generation BlueCat development environment will be made available as part of the Intel IQ80321 Software Development Kit and as a separate storage and networking solution direct from LynuxWorks.

LynuxWorks is a member of the Intel IXA Developers Forum and the Applied Computing Platform Provider (ACPP) program. The most recent collaboration provides a highly tuned embedded development environment for the Intel IOP321 I/O processor to aid developers in expediting time-to-market for new products in the increasingly competitive storage and networking markets.

"LynuxWorks has been a key supporter of Intel XScale technology since the first XScale-based I/O processors were introduced two years ago," said Christopher Croteau, director of marketing at Intel's I/O and Bridges Division. "By ensuring its BlueCat Linux and family of professional tools are configured to provide developers with an efficient and effective development environment, customers can save time and cut costs throughout the entire design process."

The new Intel IOP321 I/O processor is ideal for designs with space constraints, which require high performance, low power consumption and manageable costs. Intel is targeting the use of the processor for both storage and networking embedded product applications. Target applications in data storage include RAID, SCSI/Fibre Channel, NAS, SAN and video. For networking, the IPO321 is best suited for LAN cards, routers, switches, and Ethernet and ATM devices.

"The IOP321 I/O Processor represents the third generation of BlueCat Linux and tools enhanced for the Intel XScale core," said Dr. Inder Singh, CEO of LynuxWorks. "We are pleased to continue our close relationship with Intel by enhancing our own Linux support and commercial-grade development tools for Intel I/O processors. Developers value its enhanced productivity and performance features in a fully integrated and tested cross-development environment, which rapidly facilitates specific development requirements."

Pricing and availability

BlueCat 4.0 Linux for the Intel IOP321 I/O processor will be available in May as part of a standard bundle from LynuxWorks. Bundles are available for numerous host/target processor combinations and include basic support with optional tools and upgrades to priority-level support packages. About BlueCat

LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux is an open-source embedded development environment without run-time royalties. Packaged with a range of host/target combinations, commercial grade tools, integrated development environments (IDE) and support programs, BlueCat meets the diverse needs of individual developers.

BlueCat Linux customers have the added and unique benefit of Application Binary Interface (ABI) compatibility with LynuxWorks' BlueCat RT Linux and LynxOS real-time operating systems. As developers progress in the product design process, or as a product evolves to require real-time features, ABI compatibility gives developers an easy migration path to run the embedded software code to a more robust, real-time operating system without the cumbersome and time consuming task of porting.

LynuxWorks' tools are common to all its operating systems, so BlueCat commercial grade tools are compatible with BlueCat RT Linux and LynxOS, simplifying the design process by eliminating learning curves and reducing development costs.
