LynuxWorks Upgrades Routing and Network Management Protocols

Zebra routing protocols and net-SNMP now available for LynxOS
LynxOS RTOS network systems

SAN JOSE, Calif.—May 9, 2001—LynuxWorks™ Inc., a premier provider of open source and true real-time embedded solutions for the post-PC era, today announced the availability of Zebra routing and net-SNMP management protocols for its popular real-time operating system—LynxOS®. The availability of these protocols will simplify and reduce development cycles for companies providing communications infrastructure equipment, resulting in reduced time to market for new or upgraded products.

Routing protocols

LynxOS has increased its TCP/IP-routing protocol support with the addition of several protocols, including: RIPv1 (Routing Information Protocol), RIPv2, OSPFv1 (Open Shortest Path First), OSPFv2, OSPFv3, and BGP-4 (Border Gateway Protocol). The software also supports additional BGP 4+ behaviors: Route Reflector and Route Server. With the net-SNMP daemon that supports SMUX (SNMP Multiplexing Protocol), LynxOS new networking software can also provide the MIB (Management Information Base) for the routing protocols. The Zebra routing stack in a network system with LynxOS can act as a dedicated router, routing TCP/IP packets. For smaller networks, a sub network, or an xDSL connection, the routing software can be used to implement basic routing. The only requirements are the configuration of the system commands for static and/or default routes. For larger, more complicated networks, LynxOS offers dynamic routing protocol support of autonomous protocols such as RIP, OSPF, or BGP.

net-SNMP

net-SNMP (formerly known as UCD-SNMP) is a protocol used to deliver network management information between networked hosts. Administrators can manage certain aspects of networking using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), including performance management and problem detection. net-SNMP version 4.1.1 for LynxOS supports SNMPv2 and SNMPv3, and MIBI and MIBII. The net-SNMP architecture is comprised of three elements: Managed Devices, Agents, and Network Management Stations (NMS). LynuxWorks support of net-SNMP is valuable for embedded systems developers. Its open source license and market prevalence will allow developers to be instantly more productive than with other closed-source proprietary SNMP implementations. "The addition of the Zebra and net-SNMP protocols to LynxOS will help our customers developing networked-managed products. This significantly bolsters our product offering targeted at the communications equipment manufacturers and will result in the time-to-market benefits they are seeking by making engineering staff productivity higher during the design and development process," said Greg Rose, director of product management for LynuxWorks.
