SAN JOSÉ, Calif., August 15, 2000—Motorola Computer Group, part of Motorola's (NYSE:MOT) Integrated Electronic System Sector and the world's leading supplier of embedded computing platforms for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), today announced the MBX2000, a high-performance EBX board for low power and small form factor applications.
This EBX open-architecture embedded controller, supported by Intel's Pentium® II processor, is at the heart of a variety of embedded solutions that people depend on every minute of everyday, including medical diagnostic equipment and network appliances. Its deeply embedded, high-performance form factor provides the benefit of low power consumption and heat dissipation that enables OEMs to deliver cost-effective systems designed to meet end-user specifications.
OEMs integrating flat panel displays, for example, require high performance and uptime in a very small footprint. The deeply embedded MBX2000 embedded controller combines a small form-factor-computing engine with onboard graphics. This solution supports flat panel displays without any additional hardware integration effort.
At LinuxWorld Expo 2000, Motorola's "Embedded Connections" partners, including Lineo, LynuxWorks and MontaVista, will be showcasing their products on Motorola's MBX2000. These demonstrations will highlight the benefits of the MBX2000, including reduced time-to-market, open hardware architecture and lower cost of ownership.
LynuxWorks will be demonstrating the interoperability of applications across both the Linux compatible, scalable LynxOS® and the open source BlueCat™ Linux with two MBX2000s serving as the base for these applications.
Commenting on this announcement, Art Swift, Chief Operating Officer of LynuxWorks said, "Our customers are looking to deliver deeply embedded solutions for critical applications, while enjoying the reduced time-to-market advantages of Embedded Linux. Motorola's open architecture strategy for the MBX2000 dovetails with our open platform development environment. Together we offer a powerful solution to a market that demands reliability for their critical applications."
ACT/Technico, a leading supplier of integrated embedded systems, will be providing a full-integrated solution for Motorola's MBX2000 known as EMBoX. "This is a well designed reference platform that provides the customer with a turn-key development tool," said Ken Grob, vice president of Sales, ACT/Technico. "With the EMBoX, OEM developers and software houses can use the same reference hardware, facilitating software development, integration and test. This enables the customer to focus on its core competencies and dramatically reduce time-to-market."
Avnet, a global electronic components and computer products distributor and Fortune 500 company, will include the MBX2000 in development kits being created for OEMs requiring flat panel support. This kit will allow developers to shorten development time and speed time to market.
The MBX2000 has a number of hardware features for deeply embedded small-form applications, including:
