Lynx Delivers BlueCat Linux

Open-source OS is industry's first to be certified for reliability and quality

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., February 7, 2000—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc., today announced the availability of BlueCat™ Linux, Release 1.0, Lynx' version of Linux for high-availability, high-reliability embedded applications. BlueCat Linux is part of the Lynx™ suite that allows embedded systems development of both BlueCat Linux and the LynxOS® real-time operating system with a common compatible tool set. BlueCat is covered by Lynx' advanced customer support capability, designed specifically to meet the needs of embedded development and deployment.

The BlueCat OS is the only open-source Linux, for development and deployment of embedded products, certified for quality and reliability. The Lynx suite is developed and manufactured using Lynx' ISO 9001 quality processes. Through Lynx, BlueCat applications can be integrated with LynxOS applications to provide a choice of real-time performance and reliability matching the schedule, market and features for embedded development.

BlueCat, a tested and stabilized Linux version based on Red Hat 6.1, is binary compatible with Linux applications, system and development tools and drivers to allow rapid, efficient embedded deployment. Lynx provides cross development support for BlueCat to a variety of popular embedded processors and includes an advanced test methodology to ensure quality and reliability.

"BlueCat and its development environment, Lynx, has established Lynx as a key player in the embedded Linux market," said Rick Lehrbaum of LinuxDevices.com, the embedded Linux portal. "By taking the bold strategy of 'competing' against themselves in delivering BlueCat Linux, Lynx has provided a viable business model that will avoid fragmenting Linux. Real-time support is an important option for embedded developers who are choosing Linux as their operating system."

Lynx

The Lynx architecture is comprised of BlueCat embedded development and debugging tools, shells, libraries, utilities, browsers and device support services. The environment offers:

  • Tools common with the LynxOS suite to simplify the development learning curve
  • A hard real-time OS combined with an open-source OS to reduce overall costs and satisfy all Linux embedded requirements through a single vendor
  • A common Linux application to protect investment and portability.

BlueCat is supported by more than 100 partner companies providing applications and third-party development tools, including:
