SAN JOSÉ, Calif. and Hanscom Air Force Base—October 4, 1999—Lynx Real-Time Systems and representatives at Hanscom Air Force Base today announced the choice of LynxOS® as the initial underlying platform for the real-time extensions to Defense Information Infrastructure Common Operating Environment (DII COE). The multi-vendor, multi-service DII COE provides a standards-based software platform for a wide range of command and control applications.
The LynxOS real-time operating system was selected by DII COE for its mission-critical applications because of its hard real-time performance, adherence to standards, reliable processing environment and high availability technology.
DII COE leverages commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software (Ada, CORBA, Java, and UNIX®/POSIX® APIs) and hardware (VME and other architectures) to streamline system development and procurement. By enhancing the DII COE core definitions to include hard real-time performance, the real-time extensions to the DII COE (DII COE RTE) extend the reach of the program to include classes of applications that previously required costly proprietary solutions.
"LynxOS met our three key real-time criteria: Prioritization, Preemption and Predictability, and is fully POSIX Standard conformant." states Lt. Col. Lucie Robillard, Air Force Executive Agent, DII COE Real-time Extensions. "With the initial foundation provided by LynxOS, the DII COE RTE will be ready to face the technical challenges to come in the 21st century military. This also paves the way for inclusion of other real-time operating systems in future DII COE releases."
"Lynx has a long tradition of delivering commercial-off-the-shelf OS solutions," said William Hogan, Lynx president and CEO. "With the COTS solution defense system manufacturers are able to field advance real-time computing systems faster with lower costs."
Spearheaded by Boeing's AWACs upgrade program, DII COE RTE adoption is spreading among vendors and armed services, all wanting to leverage COTS technology. Several new key programs are poised to adopt the DII COE RTE, including the Joint Tactical Terminal/Common Integrated Broadcast Service-Modules (JTT/CIBS-M) (i.e. Intel Receiver/Exciter). DII COE real-time extensions corporate sponsors include Lynx Real-time Systems, Motorola Computer Group, Force Computers, CETIA, and others.
