LynxOS remains the operating system of choice for scheduled upgrade
SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—March 29, 1999—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. today announced its LynxOS operating system has been chosen for The Boeing Company's Step 1 mission computer upgrade for the U.S. Air Force's Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) fleet. This is the first commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)-based software upgrade to be used on the AWACS system and includes interfaces to on-board mission computers used for surveillance, and C3 (command, control and communications).
Lynx was chosen for its high-availability, mission-critical features that enable re-use of legacy code and the ability to easily do future upgrades in both hardware and software. LynxOS currently resides on all 22 COTS CPUs added to the AWACS aircraft by the Step 1 upgrade.
"The AWACS is one of the most technologically demanding systems in the world," said Bill Hogan, president of Lynx. "LynxOS provides the foundation necessary to keep up with the advances in mission-critical electronic systems that are regularly integrated into this program."
"Selection of LynxOS for AWACS sends a clear message about the use of COTS," said Dr. Paul Kaminski, chairman and CEO of Technovation, Inc, and former Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Technology. "The DOD and its leading prime contractors are going beyond talking about COTS. They are now moving out to integrate our once separate defense and commercial industries through the application of leading COTS products in critical defense systems."
