Lynx Real-Time Systems adds Support for NEC VR5464 RISC Processor

LynxOS cross-development support added for HP/UX platform

SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—October 26, 1998—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. today announced that it has ported the LynxOS real-time operating system (RTOS) to the NEC VR Series MIPS RISC microprocessor architecture. The first MIPS RISC processor supported is NEC's 64-bit VR5464 processor targeted for the communications and office automation markets.

"Lynx has an industry-wide reputation for the performance, scalability, and reliability of its RTOS," said Ed Forbes, senior marketing manager, VR Series Development Tools for NEC Electronics. "We believe customers and developers will find the VR 5464 processor and LynxOS a very efficient and appealing combination."

"Embedded systems developers have long valued the hard real-time performance and high availability of the LynxOS in x86/Pentium, PowerPC, 68K and mSPARC based designs for mission critical business and telecommunications applications," said Dr. William Hogan, president of Lynx. "Porting LynxOS to the NEC VR5464 processor allows Lynx to address high-volume embedded applications in telecommunications, data networks, and office automation. The MIPS architecture offers compelling advantages in these market spaces and NEC is a leading MIPS licensee. We look forward to working with NEC to deliver the competitive advantages of LynxOS to customers designing these exciting new intelligent products."

LynxOS delivers real-time performance, patented interrupt handling, memory management technology, and industry leading POSIX® support for embedded applications. The VR5464 processor is part of the NEC VR5400 family for communications and office automation applications, including advanced laser and color laser printers and multifunction peripherals combining scanning, printing and fax capabilities. The high performance offered by the VR5400 family also makes it a compelling choice for internetworking devices, such as routers, switches and back-office equipment, and for advanced consumer products such as set-top boxes, digital converters and digital televisions.

LynxOS Open Development Environment for HP/UX

In addition to porting LynxOS to the NEC VR5464 processor, Lynx has added a support for HP/UX platforms to its powerful LynxOS Open Development Environment (ODE). The LynxOS ODE includes compilers for C and C++, as well as Total/db, an enhanced version of the gdb debugger. Optional tools include TotalView, a source-level, window-oriented debugger for LynxOS, and TimeScan, an event-based tracing and performance analysis tool with event logging at a microsecond or better resolution.
