Boeing Chooses LynxOS for 777 Cabin Services

LynxOS chosen to automate cabin crew Tasks on Boeing's newest jetliner

SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—August 3, 1998—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc., a leader in embedded software solutions, today announced it has been awarded a long-term contract to provide the operating software for the cabin services system used on Boeing's 777, the aviation giant's newest and most technically advanced commercial jetliner.

Linked to a computerized control console, the Boeing 777 Cabin Services System, or CSS, allows the cabin crew easy control of the lighting, boarding music, address system and cabin doors. The CSS also allows maintenance crews the ability to view the system for faults from one location.

Boeing chose LynxOS because of LynxOS support for numerous off-the- shelf devices and its strong adherence to industry standards. As such, programmers are able to leverage UNIX expertise to port code rapidly from other operating systems to LynxOS. LynxOS's X and Motif subsystems handle the entire user interface.

"It's gratifying that Boeing chose Lynx to play such a vital role in one of the aviation industry's most advanced airliner," said Dino Brusco, Lynx's vice president of marketing. "The military and aerospace industries comprise a significant part of our overall business mix, and this contract further strengthens our position in these markets."

CSS benefits

The CSS automates many of the tasks flight attendants previously performed manually, such as cabin lighting and controlling the passenger address and cabin interphone system.

In addition, the CSS consolidates system faults and displays them on one panel, instead of the individual panels above each seat, increasing the response time of maintenance crews servicing the aircraft.
