Lynx Delivers Support for Cetia PowerPC VMELynxOS supports the VMPC4a and CVME603e for key military and commercial markets

SAN JOSÉ, Calif. and CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—July 27, 1998—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. today announced that the LynxOS real-time operating system (RTOS) supports the CETIA, Inc. PowerEngine family line of single processor, VME Single Board Computers (SBCs) offering clock speeds starting at 200MHz in a single slot.

LynxOS Version 3.0 delivers real-time performance, patented interrupt handling, memory management technology, and industry leading POSIX® support for CETIA's VMPC4a and VME603e boards. CETIA's PowerEngine Family line of products, which includes the VMPC4a and CVME603e, features clock speeds of up to 266Mhz plus; a 603e, 604e PowerPC processor; Union Host bridge; ALMA64 PCI/VME bridge; COBRA real-time I/O controller; on-board Ethernet 100baseT; up to four PCI mezzanine card (PMC) sites. CETIA's high performance single-slot 6U VME board packages are compact in design, even when CETIA's heat sink, The Ruggedizer, is added on for additional reliability and performance in severe environments.

"CETIA's long history with the PowerPC processor is further strengthened by the Lynx partnership," said Hubert Canuet, Vice President of Worldwide Sales, CETIA, SA. "With the immense power of CETIA's PowerEngine family line of products and Lynx's OS, our commercial and military customers will have the real-time performance that their applications command."

Daimler-Benz Aerospace, Dornier, chose the CETIA-LynxOS solution for Phase C of the PRIMUS robotics programs (Program of Intelligent Mobile Unmanned Systems) based on CETIA's unique expertise in PowerPC technology and in the defense industry, as well as for CETIA's quality of support services. Dornier required a totally integrated solution with state-of-the-art hardware, software and optimized add-on tools on one processing platform for image processing, signal processing, and command/control applications. CETIA simplified Dornier's purchasing decision with a one stop shopping solution.

Key LynxOS benefits

LynxOS offers a variety of features that help meet the industry's needs for performance and reliability. LynxOS offers:

  • Stable, proven real-time technology: LynxOS is the real-time operating system of choice for a broad range of demanding applications in military, aerospace, communications, and industrial control.
  • Patented interrupt handling and Open-System ROMing technology: LynxOS priority-tracking kernel threads guarantee rapid response to real-time events for greater system stability and predictability; Lynx Open-System ROMing of kernel and application images and file systems promote the re-use of proven hosted UNIX/POSIX code in embedded systems.
  • Reliable Processing Environment (RPE): A unique combination of integrated hardware memory management (MMU) support and a family of high availability solutions offer LynxOS-based applications a level of reliability unmatched in the industry.
  • Multi-process and Multi-threaded application support: LynxOS offers both POSIX process and threads support for maximum flexibility, reliability, and portability of real-time applications.
  • Standards compliance and real-time performance: LynxOS compliance to industry standards, like POSIX and Java, offers substantial cost savings through code portability/re-use across all classes of applications, but especially important to telecommunications and aerospace developers.

About Lynx Real-Time Systems

Lynx is a worldwide supplier of embedded software solutions including real-time operating systems, development tools, support and consulting. These products are used in a broad spectrum of applications including telecommunications switches, printer, avionics control systems, automotive test systems and process control systems.

Lynx products shorten product development cycles and reduce costs for software engineers. By committing to POSIX, UNIX, Java and other industry standards, the company enables customers to leverage their investments in software development and education. No other real-time operating systems matches the degree of LynxOS compliance to POSIX, which defines the industry-standard API for UNIX and is the first standard API for real-time embedded applications.

Founded in 1988 as a privately-held company, Lynx has offices in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, with worldwide headquarters in San José, California.
