Lynx and HP jointly announce support for real-time Java
SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—May 13, 1998—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc., a leading supplier of real-time embedded software development solutions, today announced plans to offer HP's embedded virtual machine (EVM). Joined by other key embedded and real-time software and hardware vendors, including Intel, Lynx endorsed the HP Java execution engine, with its small footprint, soft real-time features and custom configuration capabilities. Starting later this year, by deploying the HP EVM running on LynxOS, Lynx customers will be able to field real-time Java applications in a wide range of products.
"We are excited about HP's commitment to providing Java technology for embedded systems," states Inder Singh, Lynx CEO. "HP is known for producing cost effective, quality products which incorporate a significant embedded software. HP's understanding of the unique requirements of the embedded marketplace make them an ideal technology partner for Lynx. Supplying HP's embedded Java technology will enable us to meet our customers' requirements for a true real-time, scalable, embedded Java environment".
The move to offer the HP EVM on LynxOS continues the long-term relationship between Lynx and HP, which began with the private labeling of LynxOS as HP-RT (HP's real-time OS for PA-RISC) and also encompasses HP resale of LynxOS with Pentium-based VXI-bus systems for industrial control, as well as a number of embedded design wins within various HP product lines.
"HP is dedicated to working with the leaders in the embedded industry to bring innovative new solutions to market," said Jim Bell, general manager responsible for HP's embedded virtual machine. "The embedded virtual machine announcement is just the beginning. By fall, we expect thousands of designers will be prototyping new products. Some of these products will include revolutionary features enabled by HP's embedded virtual machine."
HP's independently developed virtual machine complies with the full Java virtual-machine specification and is optimized for use in electronics devices, appliances and in other embedded systems. Designed for environments with resource constraints, HP's virtual machine gives developers the flexibility to create a system with just the functionality needed for their product.
