LOS ANGELES and SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—January 26, 1998—Trillium Digital Systems, Inc., a leading provider of communications software solutions, and Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc., a leader in embedded applications, today announced a marketing partnership designed to ease integration efforts and reduce time-to-market for customers using Trillium software products on the Lynx operating system (LynxOS) product.
The demand for embedded communications applications in networking equipment, switching devices, multimedia systems and video conferencing products has increased substantially, particularly as the price of 32-bit microprocessors continues to decrease. The Lynx and Trillium partnership will speed the portation of protocol stacks for computer and communications equipment manufacturers for all of Trillium's software products running in the LynxOS environment. This direct implementation will enable quicker portation of Trillium's communication software with LynxOS and cut product development time.
"Trillium's LAN emulation client, UNI Management Entity (UME), and signaling stack are first rate", said John Schmaus, Member Technical Staff at Lucent Technologies. "Our port of Trillium to LynxOS 2.3 and 2.5 went smoothly and we found it performs well with a number of our vendors switches. This Lynx and Trillium partnership would have reduced our development cycle." Rajiv Sinha, Vice President of Engineering at Lynx, said, "Lynx has developed a large customer base by delivering products that support a reliable processing environment for sophisticated communications applications. We selected Trillium because of the breadth of protocol suites available and because of Trillium's emphasis on a consistent, portable architecture. For example, LynxOS leverages the built-in MMU (Memory Management Unit) in the Motorola MPC860 processor, and Trillium supplies a broad set of protocol stacks for the integrated Communications Processor Module on the MPC860. These complementary strengths are the basis for a strong partnership between Trillium and Lynx."
Lynx will directly implement the system services required to connect Trillium software and the LynxOS operating system. These system services include memory, timer, queue management, scheduling, and passing of buffers between various tasks. Typically, computer and communications equipment manufacturers map Trillium's System Services Interface (SSI) to an operating system. The LynxOS direct implementation will remove one step in the product development cycle, saving Lynx and Trillium joint customers time and cost. This implementation of Trillium's Signaling System 7 (SS7), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN), Frame Relay, V5, Internet Protocol (IP) and X.25/X.75 communications software, eases product development for customers running their products in the LynxOS environment.
Trillium President and CEO Jeff Lawrence said "The combination of Trillium's wide range of communications software products and the LynxOS real-time solution is significant for the embedded communications industry. After Lynx has completed the portation, Trillium and Lynx will work closely together to perform joint testing to certify LynxOS compliance with the Trillium System Services Interface."
Lynx has established a significant presence in the telecommunications industry and in a wide spectrum of application areas, including central office switches, access equipment, line switches, multiplexers, base stations, PBXs, multimedia services, and voice recognition services. The performance, reliability, and flexibility of LynxOS bring the required operating system features to the telecommunications industry. These features help ensure a stable platform with a low mean time between failure, a performance range allowing for life-cycle growth as user demands increase, and an easy in-field maintenance and upgrade path.
Trillium software has become the de facto standard in ATM and SS7 signaling. With the broadest communications software product range in the industry, Trillium provides customers with interworking capabilities and ease of portation and migration through a common architecture. Trillium's flexible and reliable platform for computer and communications equipment manufacturers enables them to quickly develop applications for their products. Support for Trillium's protocol stacks via the System Services Interface will be available with LynxOS version 3.0, scheduled to ship in the second quarter of 1998.
