Naperville, Ill.—November 13, 1996—SpyGlass® Inc. (NASDAQ: SPYG) announced today it has licensed its Web technology and Sun's Java technology to Lynx Real-Time Systems, a leading supplier of embedded software. Lynx will incorporate Spyglass' Web Client Software Development Kit (SDK) technology and the Java run-time technology with LynxOS, the industry's first embedded, scalable, multi-platform, real-time operating system.
"This agreement with Spyglass is the first step in our strategy to incorporate Web client/server technology and Java support into our scalable embedded operating system," said Dino Brusco, Director of Communications Marketing. "It is clear that intelligent devices of all types, be they phone switches, data switches or office automation equipment, are being networked. Furthermore, these networks of devices are using the ubiquitous Spyglass Web Browser technology for configuring, monitoring, and servicing these products to reduce cost and provide local or remote access via the Web."
The Spyglass Web Browser client technology is componentized for easier integration and scalablility. The Spyglass SDK is the most comprehensive Web technology available today, covering multiple platforms and offering a complete, high quality set of premium Web technologies that developers can "mix and match" for their solution.
"We will enable Web access from a wide variety of devices by making browsing features a core component of the RTOS," said Randy Littleson, Spyglass' vice president of marketing. "We've worked hard to become the de facto standard and to provide RTOS vendors, such as Lynx, with the technology and service they require to bring products to market."
"A major shift in the marketplace has occurred to the use of the Web browser technology as the primary user interface for devices of all types, from hand-held information appliances to phone switches, said Mitch Bunnell, Lynx Chief Technology Officer. To meet the needs of our customers, the manufacturers of these devices, we are providing Spyglass Web browser technology support and have further demonstrated our commitment by making Spyglass browser technology the user interface for a new software configuration tool we have developed."
Another major component of this agreement will provide Sun's Java run-time environment to Lynx. According to Bunnell," In our continuing effort to support software re-use by our customers, a key element of our strategy is to offer the Java virtual machine as part of our LynxOS embedded operating system. The embedded marketplace is moving quickly to take advantage of Java's 'write once, run anywhere' feature.
Today, because of the use of the Java interpreter, devices are using Java for non-real-time applications such as the Graphical User Interface (GUI) for devices, Bunnell continued. In the future, we see significant improvements in Java compilation technology that will allow Java applets to execute with the same performance as 'C' applications. This will open the door to reaping the benefits of Java in real-time, embedded applications."
The Spyglass Web Browser technology and Java run-time environment will be supported by the next major release of the LynxOS operating system which is planned for mid 1997.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but typically Spyglass receives royalties from customers based on the deployment of Spyglass' technology in the customers' products, services or devices. SDK entry-level pricing starts at $25,000 for one year, which includes 1,000 licenses for distribution, technical support, updates, documentation and object code. However, there is considerable upside in that companies planning to distribute in excess of 1,000 licenses pay Spyglass a licensing fee for each copy over and above that amount.
