Lynx Extends PosixWorks with the Release of Version 2.4 of LynxOS

BOSTON, April 2, 1996—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. today announced an upgrade of PosixWorks, the company's development framework for embedded, real-time applications. The enhancements are available with the new LynxOS version 2.4 operating system and will be demonstrated this week at the Embedded Systems Conference East in Boston. LynxOS v2.4 extends Lynx' industry-leading support of POSIX® by providing full conformance with POSIX.1b which extended the POSIX standard to include real-time features.

In addition, LynxOS supports POSIX.1c by providing the threads extensions that give developers the ability to partition concurrent aspects of their program into independent threads of execution, making them more logical and maintainable.

"As companies continue to turn to off-the-shelf solutions for their embedded software development needs, they can't afford to have proprietary solutions—often because they need to reuse their code for future applications," said Inder Singh, president and CEO of Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. "Now that POSIX has codified its real-time extensions, programmers will be able to simplify their design process, thereby saving time-to-market and cost-to-market on the more complex, cutting edge applications."

LynxOS v2.4 is available for X86 and Pentium, PowerPC (601, 603, 603e, and 604), Motorola 680x0, and microSPARC/microSPARC II. A unique industry advantage is that LynxOS development tools can be run either natively on the platforms noted above or in cross development mode targeting all four platform families from SunOS and Solaris 2.x. In addition an AIX cross development system is available for PowerPC targets. LynxOS v2.4 continues support of microprocessor hardware memory management units.

Additional enhancements to LynxOS include:

  • Enhanced networking features with the addition of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) capabilities. The LynxOS Development Package comes bundled with SNMP master and sub agents allowing users to equip their applications with remote monitoring capabilities.
  • Increased PowerPC support with continuing support of Motorola, IBM PowerPC boards but also the added support of Force Computer and Creative Electronic Systems (CES) board families.
  • Improved software installation with the addition of CD-ROM support for the X86 and PowerPC platforms. Installation is made easier with better installation guides and scripts. Also, a new user guide has been added that provides a useful overview that describes how to quickly use LynxOS, development tools, and utilities.
  • Added PS/2 mouse support for the growing base of LynxOS laptop users.
  • Solaris 2.x cross development system support.
  • Additional improvements have been made in libraries, including better PowerPC math libraries.

LynxOS v2.4 provides features and capabilities that are needed by the embedded real-time industry today. LynxOS provides a deterministic real-time embedded operating system with predictable, stable and reliable performance on the microprocessor families used in today's leading embedded applications.

PosixWorks is Lynx's suite of embedded real-time products that includes LynxOS development tools, TotalView, and TimeScan. PosixWorks and POSIX/UNIX® standards provide system integrators and application builders with improved time-to-market and reduced cost-to-market. By using LynxOS and writing applications to the POSIX and UNIX standards, significant software and product development investments can be preserved when developing families of products and future life-cycle upgrades to product lines. POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for Computer Environments) is an IEEE Standard (IEEE 1003.1) and an ISO Standard (ISO 9945-1).

LynxOS v2.4 will be available for delivery in May of 1996.
