Lynx Announces First Integrated tool Family for Posix/UNIX-Networked Embedded Development Includes first system-level debugger able to handle complex distributed multiprocess and multithreaded applications

SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—September 4, 1995—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. a key supplier of open, real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced PosixWorks™, the first development tool family supporting complex debugging of embedded real-time applications across multiple platforms in a POSIX®/UNIX® environment.

PosixWorks improves on existing cross-development tools by allowing debug of complex real-time applications consisting of multiple concurrent processes (each of which may contain one or more threads) which are executing on multiple target CPUs. Previously software engineers had to attack each target CPU in a networked environment separately and could not easily determine performance of complex interactions among targets and tasks.

PosixWorks enables software developers greater flexibility in creating sophisticated applications such as media servers, ATM switches, and process control. With this new product, embedded development occurs in a self-hosted environment under LynxOS, or using cross development on a variety of UNIX workstations or both.

"With PosixWorks, Lynx has extended its POSIX-based open systems approach to real-time operating system (RTOS) to the whole development and debugging environment," said Dr. Inder Singh, president and CEO. "The PosixWorks framework is unique in allowing users to develop network applications in a heterogeneous environment consisting of LynxOS targets as well as other POSIX/UNIX systems such as Solaris, AIX or HP/UX."

The core of PosixWorks is LynxOS, the only UNIX-compatible, NIST-certified, POSIX-compliant RTOS. LynxOS is a complete operating system ideally suited for applications requiring the advantages of a memory management unit (MMU). Developers working in a POSIX-compliant environment can use the MMU to protect application software from corruption by other concurrent application processes.

PosixWorks currently consists of the following components:

  • LynxOS
  • GNU C and C++ industry standard language tools
  • TotalView™, the first systems-oriented, network knowledgeable debugger for embedded applications
  • TimeScan™, a software profiling tool for application analysis and performance optimization

PosixWorks is available for Intel X86 and compatibles, Motorola 68040/060, PowerPC 601/603/604, MicroSPARC and MicroSPARC II.

Price and availability

The product is available now. Future enhancements to PosixWorks are planned.

LynxOS, PosixWorks and the Lynx logo are trademarked by Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. All other product names are the property of their respective companies.
