Lynx Ships First Real-Time POSIX OS for PowerPC Processor Operating system supports 601/603/604 CPUs, boosts file system performance, provides ANSI compliance, enhances X server graphics

LOS GATOS, Calif.—March 20, 1995—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. the dominant supplier of open, real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced LynxOS version 2.3, the first POSIX RTOS supporting embedded applications of the PowerPC™ 601, 603 and 604 RISC processors.

Lynx is first to market with PowerPC POSIX support due to the company's early customer access initiative which allowed LynxOS users to begin using the PowerPC months before it was supported by other RTOS vendors. LynxOS version 2.3 is also available for X86, 68K and microSPARC™ CPU architectures. Lynx announced support for the PowerPC in June 1994 and has been shipping custom PowerPC support software since last July.

New key features and benefits

Version 2.3 offers many enhancements. The most significant are:

• Enhanced Development Tools offering the GNU toolchain updated to the 2.6 Cygnus Standard Release. Features of this new toolchain include enhanced support for multi-threaded debugging and C++
• System-wide ANSI compliance offering LynxOS users greater application portability from other ANSI-compliant environments
• Fast Lynx File System performance improvement up 400 percent and faster contiguous file creation. Overall enhancements make disk intensive application development even easier, e.g. video server and data acquisition applications
• Enhanced Peripheral Support for high performance graphics, disk and ethernet cards, including PCI-bus support for Plug-and-Play

Availability

LynxOS 2.3 will be available for all currently supported platforms in Q2 1995.
