LOS GATOS, Calif.—November 22, 1994—Lynx Real-Time Systems announced that LynxOS for PowerPC 60X will be available in January, 1995 for the Motorola MVME1603 single-board computer, which is based on the PowerPC 603. Support for the Motorola MVME1604, which is based on the PowerPC 604, and the Motorola Ultra and Atlas boards will be available shortly after production versions of those boards become available. In June, 1994 Lynx announced support for the PowerPC 60X and has been shipping software to support PowerPC custom embedded designs since July, 1994. Since that software pre-dated the production availability of the Motorola board computers, it did not include direct support for them.
LynxOS for PowerPC 60X will be available as a Team Development System, Porting Kit, and Source Code. The Team Development System will be aimed at developers who plan to use a Lynx-supported reference platform, such as the Motorola board computers, as their target system. The Porting Kit will be targeted at developers who wish to port LynxOS to their own customized board based on the PowerPC 601, PowerPC 603, or PowerPC 604. Source Code will be offered to developers who require source for documentation and maintenance purposes or who wish to port LynxOS to highly custom, exotic designs or to processors other than the PowerPC 60X family.
The Team Development System, Porting Kit, and Source Code will be provided with a cross-development package to develop LynxOS applications using a host running IBM's AIX operating system (version 4.1). The cross-development package will include the GNU gcc and g++ (C and C++) cross-compilers and LynxOS libraries and header files. With the cross-development package, the kernel image and user applications can be built on the host and downloaded via TCP/IP and NFS to a networked target running LynxOS.
The Team Development System will include a 10-user license for AIX-hosted cross-development, the LynxOS operating system, TCP/IP, and NFS Server and Client. Also included will be a license to run the LynxOS Run-Time OS, TCP/IP, and NFS on one target system, the GNU gdb source-level symbolic debugger for target system debugging, various reference platform device drivers, documentation, and media.
Lynx will also offer a STREAMS Facilities Package which will provide kernel functions, system calls, libraries, and headers for developing STREAMS drivers, modules, and applications. STREAMS is a standard UNIX® facility and set of tools for the development of system communication services. A number of networking protocols from third parties (such as Banyan VINES, Apple EtherTalk, Netware, NetBIUE, X.25, and OSI stacks) have been developed with STREAMS and have either been ported or are easily portable to LynxOS with the STREAMS Facilities Package.
In addition to supporting the Motorola single board computers, LynxOS for PowerPC 60X will support the IBM Power Personal Systems desktop or PReP RI (PowerPC Reference Platform—Reference Implementation). Lynx expects to add support for additional PReP-compliant computers from various vendors as they become available.
Lynx collaborated with CETIA, a subsidiary of Thomson-CSF, to port LynxOS to the PowerPC. CETIA has been distributing LynxOS with its VME Power Engine single board computers since November, 1993 under the brand label UNI/RT 5.0. Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. is a leading supplier of open, real-time operating systems based on LynxOS, for high-end (32 bit and above) microprocessors. Its products support the capabilities of the high-end microprocessor, including the hardware memory management unit, and conform to evolving industry standards, particularly UNIX and POSIX®, simplifying the porting between different platforms. The company was established in 1985, and is headquartered in San José, California, with sales offices in Europe and Japan.
