LOS GATOS, Calif.—July 29, 1994—For the first time ever, developers can now integrate mainstream database capabilities with mission-critical, hard real-time applications on a single hardware platform using the new versions of Informix database products now available for LynxOS.
Before this announcement, developers who needed a no-compromises solution had to run their database application on one UNIX® platform and the real-time applications on another. This two-box solution not only carried a cost penalty, but needlessly complicates software development and hardware integration.
The new single-box solution is particularly important for developing applications for video-on-demand and interactive video shopping as well as for traditional real-time applications such as robotics and factory automation.
Informix for LynxOS is available from Cupertino, Calif.-based InfoSoft, Inc., who will distribute, sell and support Informix products running on LynxOS.
Through this offering, Informix becomes the first and only leading relational database and application development tool supplier to offer true real-time capabilities. Because Informix runs on UNIX, WindowsNT, Microsoft Windows, and now LynxOS, this will allow development of a common set of applications across all these operating systems.
"As real-time increasingly moves into the mainstream with such new applications as multimedia, video servers and new communications technologies, developers must provide powerful ways to store and retrieve the large amounts of data generated," said Informix President Phil White.
"The availability of Informix on LynxOS means that developers now have a powerful, fully featured database system which is portable among every major platform and is now optimized to give the best real-time performance," White added.
Informix running under the LynxOS environment takes advantage of capabilities such as set task priority levels and other features which make the Informix products suitable for even the most time-sensitive and performance-critical real-time applications.
"It doesn't matter how fast or how deterministic your real-time kernel is, if your applications software, device drivers and operating system facilities are not also deterministic and truly real-time'" said Lynx President, Dr. Inder Singh.
Currently available under LynxOS are:
Two additional products; Informix-On Line and Informix-STAR will be made available on the LynxOS operating environment later in 1994.
