Force's PowerCore product family offers designers a modular design concept which provides flexible, PowerPC®-based solutions for differing OEM requirements in the embedded computing market. PowerCore is a single slot VME CPU which provides the "building blocks" to create optimized solutions for specific applications. The concept includes the choice of PowerPC processors, I/O options including PMC expansion, a broad choice of real-time operating systems, and a range of memory options.
The PowerCore family is well suited for mid- to high-end real-time applications in telecommunications, industrial control, and command and control environments. The entry level PowerCore single-board computer is based on the PowerPC 603e. Running at 120 MHz, it delivers a performance of 3.0 SPECint95 and 2.2 SPECfp95. Higher performance applications can be served with the PowerPC 604e version running at 300 MHz. The processing performance may be increased by an optional onboard second-level cache.
The PowerCore family of single-board computers scales from the entry-level 120 MHz 603e to the 300 MHz 604e. Using the latest PowerPC technology, the PowerCore family delivers a broad performance spectrum within a single VMEbus slot.
You get a totally scalable product line without sacrificing performance or paying a high price. Readily scale performance by selecting various PowerPC processors running at different clock frequencies. Optimize memory configurations for your application by adding field-upgradeable memory modules. By choosing the right features for your application, you can reduce your total cost of ownership for low-end to high-end applications while protecting your software investment.
PowerCore was designed for embedded real-time applications. It features the I/O that is most needed in real-time and is supported by the industry's leading real-time operating systems.
Use the two PCI Mezzanine Cards (PMC) slots for I/O expansion to add modules that provide functionality such as graphics, digital signal processing and networking. Even with two PMC modules installed, the PowerCore remains a single-slot VME solution. For convenient system cabling, the user I/O signals of both PMC modules are available on the VMEbus P2 connector, supporting rear I/O connection in a system environment. A standard on-board Ethernet interface lets you integrate PowerCore in a networked system environment.
OEMs find the price/performance value of the PowerPC architecture appealing for their high-volume, high-performance applications. For OEMs, Force offers large-scale manufacturing capabilities and the option to tailor PowerCore boards in order to match application requirements.
Besides the choice of PowerPC processor and clock speed, the PowerCore family supports a flexible memory architecture. There is 16 MByte of on-board EDO DRAM memory with ECC to ensure data integrity. This is field upgradable to 272 MByte with the addition of memory modules. You can also choose up to 512 KByte of Level 2 cache to increase the processing performance for your most demanding compute-intensive applications. On-board flash memory is also available for ROM-based applications.
